What are Twin Flames, Anyway?

by Courtney Beck

What are twin flames? Are twin flame relationships meant to last a lifetime? Are twin flames and soul mates the same thing?

Questions like these come up frequently in my readings with clients. "Is my partner my twin flame? If so, why is the relationship so difficult? I thought twin flame relationships were supposed to be easy...effortless even. After all, if my twin flame is the other half of my soul, shouldn't it be smooth sailing?"

These questions are understandable, especially in light of the confusion between the terms "twin flame" and "soul mate."

In this blog post, I'll delve into the difference between twin flames and soul mates, as well as the difficulties in twin flame relationships.

Buckle up...here goes!

Soul Mates

A soul mate is a person with whom we share a past life bond. It's someone we feel deeply connected with. And we feel it immediately. There may be a sense of deja vu upon meeting. A sense that we just 'know' them. A familiarity or an inexplicable level of comfort. We can't understand this strong attraction. It's just WHAM!!! And the connection can be a with partner, family member, friend, or mentor.

It's important to understand that the term soul mate doesn't mean your "one and only" life partner, nor your perfect match. Not all soul mate relationships are romantic in nature. And we don't have just one soul mate, we have many. Once the life lessons are completed, the soul mates typically go their separate ways.

Then what are Twin Flames?

Twin Flames

Twin flames are the embodiment of divine masculine energy and divine feminine energy that was once a single energy source. One Soul. In order for us to be birthed into 3D and become human beings, that energy source was split and divided into polar opposites. Masculine energy and feminine energy, each condensed into separate forms.

In a twin flame connection, one person will have more masculine energy and the other more feminine. This is not only in heterosexual relationships, either. It can be any relationship where one person embodies a more masculine energy, and the other a more feminine energy.

Here are some aspects of a twin flame connection:

  • They usually have a similar purpose in this lifetime.

  • The think alike.

  • They have a lot in common.

  • They feel extremely attracted to one another.

  • It feels like a magnetic force pulling them towards each other.

Why are Twin Flame Relationships so Challenging?

Usually, when twin flames spend a lot of time with each other, they really piss each other off!

This is because they are divine mirrors, each reflecting the unhealed wounds and triggers of the other. These triggers bring to the surface the things in each person that need to be transmuted and healed in order for them to evolve to higher levels of consciousness. Which is ultimately the purpose of the twin flame relationship. To help each other awaken and ascend.

So, in your divine mirror (twin flame) you see all your unhealed stuff in the other person and it annoys and frustrates you. And vice versa, baby!

Since we each have a different physical form, different mindsets, backgrounds, religious upbringings, and programming from childhood, we trigger the daylights out of each other. It's like a love-hate relationship. Fun, huh? Not.

If any of those beliefs with which we have been programmed cause us to feel dependent on each other in any way, the relationship simply won't last. It just can't.

In order for twin flame relationships to work, each persons self love must be evolved to the point where they each feel completely whole without the other. That means no neediness, clingy tendencies, or codependency. They don't depend on each other to make them feel:

  • Whole

  • Happy

  • Fulfilled

  • Unconditionally self loving

How Can Twin Flames Have a Lasting Relationship?

If the partners come together already whole, it can be a satisfying and harmonious relationship. One that is highly evolved and empowering.

As long as they are really and truly awakened, the relationship has a good chance of enduring. If they are jointly aligned in their evolution, ascension process and purpose for this lifetime, the relationship can thrive and be a source of true joy and pure bliss.

If each partner is self responsible for their own personal healing and growth, and in their own awakening process, they can be a powerful couple and a force to be reckoned with.
